Deconstructing Interaction Design or Why Are You Here?

In this lesson I have reflected on why I am actually studying interaction design and what excites me about the role of a designer. Also, what is important in a design process.

In our world, we suffer from an information overload. We are bombarded with information from everywhere and it is becoming increasingly difficult to filter out what is essential. To cope with this overstimulation, many people have built up a protective wall and now hardly inform themselves anymore. One of my goals as an interaction designer is to educate people in a different and fresh way. Integrated in an appealing design or even an artistic installation, I want to put a focus on a topic and make it a better and long-lasting learning experience through interaction with the viewer.

Another desire is to learn to express myself better and to gain a voice. I would like to express my feelings and my view of the world together with my art.

Along the way, I mainly want to find out how to deal with my creativity and not trying to fit into a pigeonhole. I have to find my own niche. In addition, I would like to be motivated in topics that do not really interest me and still create something that suits me.

In a design process you have to combine many different aspects. For example, it is important to stay curious and informed about what is happening around you. You can also learn a lot by working together with other people. It is important to remain ethical and not to underestimate or abuse the great responsibility as a designer. But the most important thing is to never lose your fun along the way.

For who and what do we design? Do we design for anyone?

A case study is a detailed investigation of a particular situation, event or person. The purpose of a case study is to learn as much as possible about one case so that the information can be generalised to many other cases. Methods to gather information could be interviews, observation or existing records. Unfortunately, case studies are usually very subjective and it is sometimes difficult to generalise the results to a larger population.

A specification of a case study would be ethnography: the study of the behaviour and interactions of a particular group of people. The aim of ethnography is to develop a deep understanding of the culture, conventions and social dynamics of the group being studied.
